Just saw that "VegEm" had commented on a solids thread, so wanted to start a thread with my own queries. I am a long term vegan however have given my children meat, mainly because, when I could not be completely sure that this was the best thing for a young brain, I did not see it as my right to start a vegan diet so young. (I'm not saying it is bad, just that I did not have enough certainty at the time, to justify such a big choice). Now that my oldest child is 5, we are working toward cutting out meat, and have already phased out dairy. I will probably keep my youngest 2 children (ages 3 and 1) eating meat (they eat it about once a week) until they are a bit older. By the time they are a bit older, we will be completely vegan. I have seen some support groups online, however I am always afraid of being attacked since this has happened in the past when I say that I am a vegan who feeds my children meat, and other vegans seem to assume that my kids live off of fast food 3 meals a day, simply from the statement that they are not vegan. I do sometimes wish that we had gone vegan from the start, but at the time I did not have enough info to be sure I would be doing right by my kids. Do anyone have any links specifically about vegan children? The links I have found on my own tend to be about fear mongering surrounding meat and dairy, or about "dispelling myths". I just want some base possible problems, how to monitor how it is all going, what supplements kids should take, whether it is necessary to visit dieticians, and that kind of thing. A guide to how I then continue after we have made the change basically.
